Audiology - an unexpected update

Hack to easily document your baby's first year

In honour of our son and third baby's first birthday I thought I'd share a wee hack I have come up with with you.

With cameras in our pockets most of the time these days mothers are taking thousands of photos of their children (I'm going to hazard a guess that it's a common habit regardless if whether you like to share them on social media or not!). The problem with the endless supply of pictures of our little cherubs is that it becomes so difficult to choose our favourites and create albums of the important early years. If you're anything like me you still like to have a book with the "best of" even in these technological days where everything is backed up online.

Somehow I found the time to scrap book an album of our first born's first year but finding the time to make something as special for her younger sister seemed like it would be an impossible task. However I figured out an easy and very effortless way to document her year in photos. A system that I've stuck to now with baby number 3.
Basically I make a weekly collage of my favourite photos of them. It can be difficult enough choosing photos then as some weeks I have taken ridiculous amounts of pictures.
  • My rule is that the photo is only of the baby which narrows down my choices.
  • If a new milestone has been hit that week I try to add a photo of it as well.
  • I try to make sure I make the collage the same day every week, so this year it's been every Tuesday, to avoid forgetting it (I'm a creature of habit).
  • I have saved all the collages to their own album on my phone to make it easy to find and look through, it also means that I can check the number of collages against his age in case I've forgotten to make one.
  • At the end of the year you have 52 collages that show the transformation your baby has gone through.
It's so easy to get them printed into a book at the end of the year. So there you go a stress-free, easy and visually pleasing way to document your child's important first year.

(I've not added notes in our seconds born's album but am thinking that will be a nice added touch if I have time this time around.)

P.S. Of course you can use this method to document other periods in yours or your family's life too. For me it saved me such a head ache doing a little bit weekly rather than feeling guilt later on that I haven't made my subsequent children keepsakes of their first year when so much thought and effort went into our firstborn's album!

Here are a few of Elis' weeks from the last year. Although I love the handmade album our eldest got I kind of wish I'd thought to make these for her too. Can't wait to have these printed in a book!

Why all the butterflies?

I feel like the blog deserves a wee post explaining the reason for it's name and our family's general obsession with butterflies. I blame it all on our firstborn as we weren't always so crazy about them (don't get me wrong, we've always loved them, but the kids have taken it to a whole other level!). While expecting our first my husband and I struggled with finding a name for our daughter that we could both agree on. It seemed like we never felt love for any of the names the other would suggest, there were names we hated, names we felt lukewarm about and names that we both did quite like but they just weren't "the one". When we had broken our pregnancy news a few months previous to a close family friend her first comment had been a cheeky remark about what a nice name she had. We had all just laughed it off though and not thought anything more of it. Fast forward back to our name discussions that were getting nowhere fast despite having known the...

Succulent Carrot Cake

The last few days I've been craving a slice of carrot cake because it's one of my favourite cakes. I used to hate it as a child, I think mostly because it had a vegetable in it to be perfectly honest. However, I have also tasted some pretty awful carrot cakes, often they're dry and sometimes full of nuts and dried fruit. Now I love nuts, but not a fan of them in cakes; I am however not keen on raisins or any other dried fruits so any cake with them puts me off. I turned to the internet to find inspiration for my homemade carrot cake. I took ideas from several different recipes, partially restricted by what ingredients I had at home as I had no intentions of going to the shop today. Pretty pleased with what I came up with as is the rest of the family!  Ingredients Cake batter 3 eggs 200 ml white sugar 100 ml brown sugar (if I hadn't had any in I would've used white instead for all of it but saw it recommended for more moist...

Toddler tantrum: Poo-gate

Some toddler tantrums are so bad I'd rather shoot myself in the foot than deal with them, but a lot of them are just laughable. To be fair they get worse as they get older so I will no doubt not find my son's outbursts as funny in a year's time. But right now his tantrums are delightful, especially compared to his older sisters' ones. This photo is from the other day when I shut a door and the world ended but it's not the reason for the post. This photo was just preferable to a photo of smudged shite, as today we had a "poo-gate" moment. I say "a" because we've had numerous with each child by now. I was dropping off the dirty dishes in the kitchen and had left the toddler (sans nappy as they were all just about to get into the bath) with the older two in front of the TV when I heard my eldest yelp. "MAMMA!!! Come quick! Elis is HOLDING POOOOO!!" I ran in, and he was indeed holding poop. To be fair it was nowher...
