Audiology - an unexpected update

About Us

I'm originally from Sweden but spent my whole life moving from country to country; to begin with due to my parents' work however even after moving out I continued the nomadic lifestyle. My husband, Kris, and I met in Belgium and after several years together there and in Switzerland we moved to his home country, Scotland. It took me 10 countries (don't ask how many apartments/houses) to find home, but I definitely feel like I finally have here in rural Scotland.

We have three kids together, Vanessa & Nova as well as our son, Elis, born in 2018 with achondroplasia (the first person with dwarfism in our family). Part of the madhouse is also our 13 year old Cocker Spaniel, Nelson. We've survived 4 house moves together, 2 of those were also country moves, one with an 8 month old the second with a 2 year old while 7 months pregnant (it's possible but not necessarily fun). Even though I hope our kids don't have to move around as much as I did as a child, I enjoy sharing my multicultural upbringing with them and we are bringing them up bilingual in Swedish & English. Both my husband & I love being outdoors & are forever dragging the children out on excursions.

So far there haven't been many dull moments in life and after numerous requests from friends and family I've decided to start this blog to share my reflections on some of the events in our life. I've always enjoyed putting my thoughts into writing despite not always feeling confident that a broader audience will want to read them. But I've felt emboldened by words of support & hope that some of what I write might be useful to others, especially in the light of our son's condition. I feel like it's very much my job to spread our knowledge, and this seems like a fantastic platform to start that journey on. As for the whole parenting gig, I've definitely not figured it all out, but maybe we can laugh, cry & share tips on how to survive it together!

If you'd like to find out more about why the blog has the name it does I wrote a post about it here: Why all the butterflies?

Why all the butterflies?

I feel like the blog deserves a wee post explaining the reason for it's name and our family's general obsession with butterflies. I blame it all on our firstborn as we weren't always so crazy about them (don't get me wrong, we've always loved them, but the kids have taken it to a whole other level!). While expecting our first my husband and I struggled with finding a name for our daughter that we could both agree on. It seemed like we never felt love for any of the names the other would suggest, there were names we hated, names we felt lukewarm about and names that we both did quite like but they just weren't "the one". When we had broken our pregnancy news a few months previous to a close family friend her first comment had been a cheeky remark about what a nice name she had. We had all just laughed it off though and not thought anything more of it. Fast forward back to our name discussions that were getting nowhere fast despite having known the...

Succulent Carrot Cake

The last few days I've been craving a slice of carrot cake because it's one of my favourite cakes. I used to hate it as a child, I think mostly because it had a vegetable in it to be perfectly honest. However, I have also tasted some pretty awful carrot cakes, often they're dry and sometimes full of nuts and dried fruit. Now I love nuts, but not a fan of them in cakes; I am however not keen on raisins or any other dried fruits so any cake with them puts me off. I turned to the internet to find inspiration for my homemade carrot cake. I took ideas from several different recipes, partially restricted by what ingredients I had at home as I had no intentions of going to the shop today. Pretty pleased with what I came up with as is the rest of the family!  Ingredients Cake batter 3 eggs 200 ml white sugar 100 ml brown sugar (if I hadn't had any in I would've used white instead for all of it but saw it recommended for more moist...

Toddler tantrum: Poo-gate

Some toddler tantrums are so bad I'd rather shoot myself in the foot than deal with them, but a lot of them are just laughable. To be fair they get worse as they get older so I will no doubt not find my son's outbursts as funny in a year's time. But right now his tantrums are delightful, especially compared to his older sisters' ones. This photo is from the other day when I shut a door and the world ended but it's not the reason for the post. This photo was just preferable to a photo of smudged shite, as today we had a "poo-gate" moment. I say "a" because we've had numerous with each child by now. I was dropping off the dirty dishes in the kitchen and had left the toddler (sans nappy as they were all just about to get into the bath) with the older two in front of the TV when I heard my eldest yelp. "MAMMA!!! Come quick! Elis is HOLDING POOOOO!!" I ran in, and he was indeed holding poop. To be fair it was nowher...
