Audiology - an unexpected update

The imitation game

It's a pretty well known fact that siblings get great amusement from imitating each other. ESPECIALLY younger siblings when they copy the older ones and annoy them to the very brinks of frustration. Having a younger sister myself, I can vouch for it's efficiency in winding someone up. Our two oldest ones even have a game that consists of them saying (until it escalates to full blown shouting) "stop copying me" at each other while simultaneously making movements for the other one to copy and making pretend grumpy faces. This usually ends up with them both laughing hysterically, that is until one of them decides that they don't actually want to be copied any longer and the giggles turn into a real argument.

We've however hit a new phase with our second born as she now imitates her big sister anytime said sister injures herself. It's been going on for a couple of weeks so of course I usually brush off her whining and tell her she's fine and not sore at all. With a two and a four year old taking every opportunity to get up to nonsense while I'm distracted by their baby brother it's often impossible to know exactly what's happened. Sure the older one makes a little more sense but when they've both had a fight or someone's just tripped (because no one listens to mummy when she tells them to be careful and stop running) and I haven't witnessed the whole affair it's nigh on impossible to figure out what's happened and who is telling the truth.

So when the middle child holds the same body part as her sister and claims she's hurt I definitely take it with a grain of salt, to be fair we don't like to make a fuss unless they really are injured anyway. Yesterday, however, I noticed a bruise over her left eye, bordering on  a black eye. At two she's too wee to have much of a grasp of Aesop's fables and the story about the boy who cried wolf, but it definitely put it to mind. I feel a bit bad that I didn't take her seriously (I have no idea which time it happened either, big sister cries A LOT) but at least she didn't seem bothered by it when I noticed it at bath time.

I'm going to safely assume that this happens in other households with multiple children too, and if your kids aren't old enough yet, just think of all the fun you'll have when the wee ones figure out imitating their older sibling(s).

Why all the butterflies?

I feel like the blog deserves a wee post explaining the reason for it's name and our family's general obsession with butterflies. I blame it all on our firstborn as we weren't always so crazy about them (don't get me wrong, we've always loved them, but the kids have taken it to a whole other level!). While expecting our first my husband and I struggled with finding a name for our daughter that we could both agree on. It seemed like we never felt love for any of the names the other would suggest, there were names we hated, names we felt lukewarm about and names that we both did quite like but they just weren't "the one". When we had broken our pregnancy news a few months previous to a close family friend her first comment had been a cheeky remark about what a nice name she had. We had all just laughed it off though and not thought anything more of it. Fast forward back to our name discussions that were getting nowhere fast despite having known the...

Succulent Carrot Cake

The last few days I've been craving a slice of carrot cake because it's one of my favourite cakes. I used to hate it as a child, I think mostly because it had a vegetable in it to be perfectly honest. However, I have also tasted some pretty awful carrot cakes, often they're dry and sometimes full of nuts and dried fruit. Now I love nuts, but not a fan of them in cakes; I am however not keen on raisins or any other dried fruits so any cake with them puts me off. I turned to the internet to find inspiration for my homemade carrot cake. I took ideas from several different recipes, partially restricted by what ingredients I had at home as I had no intentions of going to the shop today. Pretty pleased with what I came up with as is the rest of the family!  Ingredients Cake batter 3 eggs 200 ml white sugar 100 ml brown sugar (if I hadn't had any in I would've used white instead for all of it but saw it recommended for more moist...

Toddler tantrum: Poo-gate

Some toddler tantrums are so bad I'd rather shoot myself in the foot than deal with them, but a lot of them are just laughable. To be fair they get worse as they get older so I will no doubt not find my son's outbursts as funny in a year's time. But right now his tantrums are delightful, especially compared to his older sisters' ones. This photo is from the other day when I shut a door and the world ended but it's not the reason for the post. This photo was just preferable to a photo of smudged shite, as today we had a "poo-gate" moment. I say "a" because we've had numerous with each child by now. I was dropping off the dirty dishes in the kitchen and had left the toddler (sans nappy as they were all just about to get into the bath) with the older two in front of the TV when I heard my eldest yelp. "MAMMA!!! Come quick! Elis is HOLDING POOOOO!!" I ran in, and he was indeed holding poop. To be fair it was nowher...
